The City of Clearwater, Fla. announces a significant increase in development and tourism-focused projects along the Gulf coast. Leading Pinellas County’s hotel renaissance, Clearwater has one newly opened and several proposed projects that together will bring more than 2,000 rooms to the area.
Development is focused mainly along South Gulfview Boulevard. Shephard’s Beach Resort completed the addition of 93 new luxury rooms, a new pool accompanied by a 7,000 square foot deck, and coming this summer, the addition of a new restaurant, poolside bar and cabanas, and tequila bar. Under construction on the former Adam’s Mark property is Opal Sands, a new 230-room, 15-story hotel by Ocean Properties. These and other proposed properties are expected to bring $200 million of taxable property to the area, further contributing to the city’s economic development initiatives.
Among the many tourism-themed projects coming to Clearwater is the introduction of the Bay Area CityPass, which offers travelers the chance to purchase prepaid admission tickets to area attractions like the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and several attractions located throughout the Tampa Bay area.
The Clearwater Marine Aquarium also served as the filming location for “Dolphin Tale” and “Dolphin Tale 2,” which will be released in theaters this September. The Aquarium proudly exhibits a rescued and rehabilitated dolphin and movie star, Winter. Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr. and Hope, a younger rehabilitated dolphin all star in the sequel “Dolphin Tale 2.”
A family-friendly destination with miles of pristine beaches and rich aquatic offerings, Clearwater’s upcoming economic development projects will facilitate further tourism growth and fuel the tourism industry’s $1.5 billion in economic impact.
